What is the advantage of using thick metallic strips to join wires in a potentiometer?

In a potentiometer, the thick metallic strips are used as they have negligible resistance and need not be counted in the length of the null point of the potentiometer. It is for the convenience of the experimenter as he measures only their lengths along the straight wires each length 1 m. This measurement is done with the help of a centimetre-scale or meter scale with accuracy.
