9.26: Spectacles of power −1.0 dioptre are being used by a person suffering from myopia for distant vision. He also needs to use a separate reading glass of power +2.0 dioptres when he turns old. Explain what may have happened.

Hint: The far point of the person can be found using lens formula.

Step 1: Find the far point of the person.
The myopic person uses spectacles of power, P = -1.0 D

The focal length of the given spectacles, f=1P=1-1×10-2=-100 cm

Using the lens formula:

1v=1f-1u=-1100
v=-100 cm

When the object is placed at infinity, the image is formed by the lens at the far point of the person.

So, the far point of the person is 100 cm. He might have a  normal near point of 25cm.

Step 2: Find the effect of aging.
During old age, the person uses reading glasses of power, P’ = +2 D
As age increases, the ability of accommodation decreases. This is known as presbyopia. This is the reason why he is finding it difficult to see the objects placed at 25 cm.
